There’s no shortage of Auckland BYO options, but finding the right mix of cuisine, price, ambiance, and X-factor for your occasion is a skill that’s not to be underestimated. There’s an art to planning the perfect BYO – here are some top options for an unforgettable night out!

1. A Wine and Paint Party!

Who says you have to be sat around a dinner table to enjoy a top BYO experience?

Wine and paint parties combine the best bits of a BYO with the fun of a painting class. Held on select Friday and Saturday nights at Studio One Toi Tū in Ponsonby, our wine and paint nights are more a ‘painting party’ than your typical ‘painting class’.

Bring a bottle of your favourite wine (with no added corkage!) and a selection of snacks, and we’ll supply everything else (painting materials, easel, apron, and wine glasses of course!).

Paint ‘n’ sip the night away in a relaxed setting perfect for mixing and mingling – a wine and paint party is also a great way to meet new people! At the end of the night take home a brand new piece of artwork ready to hang on your wall.

Ready to make memories? We throw the best wine and paint parties in Auckland. Reserve your booking for our next painting party and liven up your weekend!

2. Pok Pok

Serving up delightfully authentic Thai street food in an elegant setting, it’s no surprise this K Rd institution books out most weekends. Expect a selection of sizzling specials and Thai favourites, with very reasonable corkage (coming in at a cool $3pp).

On the rowdy side at times, if you’re after a lively atmosphere and some of the best cheap and cheerful Thai food you’ll find anywhere, Pok Pok is hard to beat.

3. Sri Penang

Sri Penang is likely to pop up on most ‘Best Auckland BYO’ lists, but as one of Auckland’s most reliable, longest-running establishments we simply had to include it.

The Malaysian chicken curry is its most famous dish, but the deep roster of equally tasty options on its extensive menu keep loyal patrons coming back for more. With $1 corkage and the option to BYO beer, Sri Penang is almost as well known for its friendly vibe and budget-friendly prices as it is for stunning good Malaysian cuisine.

4. New Flavour

Any list of top Auckland BYOs wouldn’t be complete without acknowledging at least one of Dominion Road’s esteemed dumpling houses. New Flavour has made its name on the strength of their dumplings (try the soup dumplings, they’ll change your life). However other dishes like the chilli chicken or taro in hot toffee dessert deserve just as much shine.

Turned up to find a lengthy wait time? One of the other Dominion Road dumpling stapes like Barilla or Spicy House will make a fine substitute.

5. Canton Cafe

Our advice for the optimal Canton Cafe experience? Order a selection of options (with plenty of vege dishes on offer) and make full use of the lazy susan provided to build a banquet for your party.

Taking bookings deep into the wee small hours on weekends, Canton is probably the liveliest BYO experience in Auckland. Come here for the big atmosphere and even bigger dishes (seriously, their meals are massive).

6. Sawadee

Fancy more of an upmarket vibe? Sawadee offers an atmosphere that’s a little more tranquil. The kind of BYO where you can comfortably enjoy a nice bottle of wine and some quiet conversation.

That being said, the quality of the food is likely to have you enthusiastically singing its praises with every bite. The entree platter is a fan favourite and the perfect way to prepare your palate for what’s to come.

7. Grasshopper Thai

Grasshopper Thai is located on the lowest floor of the glitzy Stamford Plaza (where all your favourite A-list celebrities stay when they come to town). This spacious haunt boasts a selection of booths, private areas, and gargantuan tables to suit just about any sized party.

Come for the five-star menu, stay for the sumptuous decor and wonderful service. Who knows, you might even spot a celeb while you’re there!

8. Satya

This staple of South Indian cuisine offers spicy, flavoursome curries a cut or two (or three) above your average butter chicken. The corkage is reasonable ($4 per person), and the food is uniformly excellent.

Just make sure you go to the right Satya if you’re meeting friends! With four locations in reasonably close proximity, many a diner has found themselves at the wrong one!
